Jordan in September: Travel Guide, Weather and Tips
September is the month Jordan starts its recovery from summer. The temperatures are still high — this is not September in northern Europe — but the improvement from the August peak is real, and by the last week of the month, mornings in Amman feel genuinely fresh. Petra becomes more viable for longer visits. The Dead Sea is warm and calm. And the hotel rates have not yet caught up with the crowd levels that October will bring, making September a quiet month with better conditions than its reputation suggests.
Weather in Jordan in September
| City | Avg High °C | Avg Low °C | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amman | 32 | 19 | Cooling but still warm, no rain |
| Petra | 31 | 17 | Manageable mornings, hot afternoons |
| Wadi Rum | 37 | 21 | Cooling down, still warm at midday |
| Aqaba | 37 | 26 | Beach season winding down, still warm |
| Dead Sea | 37 | 25 | Warm and calm |
The transition from summer to autumn in Jordan is gradual. September’s first week feels almost identical to August. By mid-September, the mornings are notably cooler — Amman at 06:00 in late September can feel almost pleasant. The nights are the leading indicator: by late September, Amman’s overnight lows drop to around 18°C, which means sleeping without air conditioning becomes possible and the city’s terrace culture begins to re-emerge.
Events and What’s On in September
Jordan Rally (occasional — date varies) The Jordan Rally WRC round sometimes falls in September rather than March depending on the FIA calendar year. Check the current season schedule at wrc.com.
Eid al-Adha (possible — date varies) If Eid al-Adha falls in September (it shifts annually), the same domestic travel patterns as described in the August guide apply. Check the Islamic calendar for the current year.
End of Aqaba Beach Season The beach resorts of Aqaba are still operational in September but begin scaling back watersports activities and staff towards the end of the month. September is one of the last reliably warm beach months before Aqaba transitions to the cooler season. Sea temperatures remain around 29°C through September.
Where to Stay and Eat
Petra September prices at Petra accommodation are transitional — starting near the summer lows and rising as October approaches. The Old Village Hotel and Resort in Wadi Musa offers rooms from approximately JOD 70–90 in September, with a pool that is necessary and well-used in the early part of the month. For food, Al Wadi Restaurant in Wadi Musa serves a solid Jordanian set menu — soup, mezze, main, dessert — for around JOD 12 per person.
Dead Sea The Dead Sea resort strip runs along the northeastern shore of the lake, accessed from Amman in about an hour. The Kempinski Hotel Ishtar Dead Sea has September rates from around JOD 120–150 per night (dropping from the summer high in August). A day pass to the beach and pools costs approximately JOD 45 if you are not staying overnight — worth knowing for a day trip from Amman.

- Jerash Festival (if it was running) has ended
Hiking in September
The latter half of September marks the unofficial return of Jordan’s hiking season. The Wadi Mujib Siq Trail — a wading hike through a narrow canyon that meets the Dead Sea — is one of the most popular half-day walks in Jordan and is best between mid-September and mid-November. The trail involves wading through knee-to-waist-deep water for sections. Entry is via the Mujib Biosphere Reserve; a JOD 21 guided fee applies (as of 2026). Advance reservation is strongly recommended at rscn.org.jo.
The Dana Biosphere Reserve hiking trails (including the Wadi Dana Trail to Feynan and the Rummana Circuit) are comfortable from late September through November. The autumn light in Dana’s dramatic canyon landscape is excellent.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Is September a good time to visit Jordan?
- September is an underrated month. The heat is moderating from the summer peak — Amman drops to 32–34°C — and the crowds are still thin from the summer low. Prices are below the October peak. Petra becomes considerably more comfortable than July–August.
- Is it still hot in Jordan in September?
- Yes, notably so in the first half. Amman averages 34°C in early September, dropping to around 30°C by month end. Wadi Rum midday still reaches 38–40°C. The improvement over August is real but gradual — the same strategy of early morning sightseeing applies through most of the month.
- Is the Dead Sea worth visiting in September?
- The Dead Sea is warm and calm in September — water temperature around 32°C. The intense heat of August makes the Dead Sea challenging in high summer, but September's slightly lower temperatures make it more comfortable. Resorts run good rates in September before the October surge.
