Jordan in April: Travel Guide, Weather and Tips
April is the month most serious Jordan travellers choose, and the reason is straightforward: the weather is as good as it gets. Temperatures in Amman sit in the 20–25°C range, the air is dry, the spring greenery is still visible in the north, and the days are long. Petra at this time of year is genuinely spectacular — the warm light, the manageable heat, and the relatively short walk from the Siq entrance to the Treasury all come together. The downside is that everyone knows this, and prices and crowds follow accordingly.
Weather in Jordan in April
| City | Avg High °C | Avg Low °C | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Amman | 23 | 11 | Warm, dry, occasional brief showers early month |
| Petra | 22 | 9 | Excellent — warm afternoons, cool evenings |
| Wadi Rum | 26 | 12 | Ideal desert conditions |
| Aqaba | 29 | 20 | Hot and dry, excellent for beach and diving |
| Dead Sea | 28 | 18 | Warm and pleasant |
April is Jordan’s climatically optimal month. The rains that fall in Amman through winter taper off by mid-April, leaving a window of clear skies and comfortable temperatures that lasts through into May. The heat that makes July and August difficult has not arrived. Wadi Rum in April is extraordinary — warm enough to be comfortable but not the 40°C+ that makes daytime desert walks inadvisable in summer.
Events and What’s On in April
Easter — Madaba (date varies) Madaba is the centre of Jordan’s Christian heritage tourism. The town’s Church of St George contains the oldest surviving map of the Holy Land — a 6th-century mosaic floor covering Byzantine-era Palestine, Jordan, Egypt, and Lebanon. At Easter (date varies — usually late March or April on the Orthodox calendar), Madaba’s churches hold services and the town has a gentle festive atmosphere. Entry to the Church of St George costs approximately JOD 3 (as of 2026).
Jordan Trail Season Begins April is the ideal month to start or join a section of the Jordan Trail, the 650km long-distance route from Umm Qais to Aqaba. The Jordan Trail Association (jordantrail.org) coordinates guided group treks, and April sees the highest number of organised groups. Section hikes through the Petra region and the Dana–Sharah section are particularly popular.
Anzac Day — Aqaba (25 April) The Australian and New Zealand communities hold a dawn service at Aqaba commemorating the Gallipoli campaign, as Aqaba was a significant point in the Arab Revolt that took place in parallel. Small and low-key, but historically interesting.

Petra in April: Practical Tips
Petra opens at 06:00. Arriving at that time gets you the Siq and Treasury approach with very few other visitors — perhaps 30 minutes before the first tour groups. By 08:30 it is busy; by 10:00 it is extremely crowded. The Monastery (Ad Deir) requires an 800-step climb but sees far less traffic than the Treasury. The Royal Tombs on the eastern cliff face are best visited in late afternoon when the sun hits the facade directly.
A one-day Petra ticket costs approximately JOD 50 (as of 2026). The Jordan Pass covers this if you hold one.
