Where to Stay Near Mount Nebo: Hotels in Madaba and the Surrounding Area

Mount Nebo is where Moses is said to have looked out over the Promised Land before his death, and the view across the Jordan Valley toward the Dead Sea and the distant hills of Palestine is, on a clear day, genuinely striking. The site has a Franciscan church, Byzantine mosaics, and an observation terrace. What it does not have is any accommodation whatsoever.

This is a day-trip destination. All visitors stay in the surrounding area and drive or take a taxi to the summit. Madaba — 9 km away — is the logical base, and the two sites are so naturally combined that most visitors cover them on the same morning or afternoon.

Staying in Madaba (Recommended Base)

Moab Land Hotel is a boutique property in Madaba’s old town, approximately 9 km from Mount Nebo — rates from approximately JOD 50–75 per night as of 2026 with breakfast. The location in the old town means the Madaba mosaic sites (St George’s Church, the Archaeological Park) are walkable, and a taxi to Mount Nebo takes 15 minutes and costs approximately JOD 8–12 return with waiting time. The hotel staff can advise on timing and arrange taxis.

Mariam Hotel in Madaba is another well-run boutique guesthouse at approximately JOD 45–65 per night as of 2026 with breakfast. Family-run and consistently praised for service. The same proximity to both Madaba’s sights and Mount Nebo.

Queen Ayola Hotel in Madaba is a mid-range conventional hotel at approximately JOD 40–60 per night as of 2026. A practical choice for travellers who do not need boutique character and want a reliable mid-range base. Restaurant on site for breakfast and dinner.

For budget accommodation in Madaba, small guesthouses and family-run properties start from approximately JOD 20–35 per night. The Madaba Youth Hostel offers dormitory beds for solo travellers at around JOD 10–15 as of 2026.

Staying at the Dead Sea (30–35 km Away)

The Dead Sea resort strip is 30–35 km west of Mount Nebo — about 35–45 minutes by car, descending from the highland plateau to 400 metres below sea level. If a luxury resort experience is part of your Jordan trip, combining it with a day trip to Mount Nebo and Madaba is a very practical itinerary.

Kempinski Ishtar Dead Sea — rates from approximately JOD 150–250 per night as of 2026 — is one of the flagship luxury properties on the Dead Sea shore. The resort has multiple pools, a private beach, spa facilities, and several restaurants. Mount Nebo is a 40-minute taxi ride from here.

Marriott Dead Sea Resort and Spa at rates from approximately JOD 130–220 per night as of 2026 offers similar facilities at a comparable price point. The Marriott is well-positioned for excursions to Madaba and Mount Nebo and can arrange private transfers.

Mövenpick Resort Dead Sea at approximately JOD 120–200 per night as of 2026 is a large resort with extensive pool and beach facilities. Popular with families and couples combining relaxation with King’s Highway sightseeing.

Staying in Amman and Day-Tripping

Amman is approximately 50 km from Mount Nebo — 45–60 minutes by car. If Amman is your base, a day trip combining Mount Nebo and Madaba is standard and well worth doing. The route from Amman passes through the outskirts of the city and descends toward Madaba before continuing to the Mount Nebo summit.

By public transport from Amman, the most practical route is to take a minibus to Madaba (from South Bus Station, JOD 0.50–1 as of 2026, journey approximately 30–40 minutes) and then a taxi from Madaba to Mount Nebo.

Practical Notes for Visiting Mount Nebo

Site entry costs approximately JOD 3 as of 2026 (included in the Jordan Pass if you hold one).

Opening hours are approximately 08:00–19:00 in summer, 08:00–17:00 in winter — confirm at the visitor centre or Madaba Tourist Police office on your day of visit.

The cafeteria at the site serves simple food and hot drinks. It is adequate for a coffee or a snack but not for a proper meal. Plan lunch in Madaba before or after the site visit.

The view is weather-dependent. On very clear winter mornings after rain, it is sometimes possible to see the Jerusalem skyline. In summer haze or cloud, visibility can be limited to the Jordan Valley floor. Early morning gives the best chance of clear views.
