The US Embassy in Amman published a security alert on 8 October 2026, advising US citizens in Jordan and those planning to travel there of a heightened risk of short-notice flight cancellations and airspace closures. The embassy confirmed it remains open for routine citizen and visa services.
The alert follows a period of regional instability that has affected airline operations across the broader Middle East since late September. The US State Department continues to list Jordan at Level 3: Reconsider Travel.
What the Alert Covers
The specific concern raised by the Embassy is short-notice disruption to aviation - flight cancellations or airspace changes that could materialise with little warning, making it difficult for passengers to rebook or reroute. It does not place restrictions on travel within Jordan itself.
Advisories From Other Governments
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office lifted its “advise against all but essential travel” classification for Jordan in June 2026 and cleared the separate Aqaba restriction in August. The FCDO’s current position allows travel to Jordan, with an ongoing warning to stay clear of areas within 3km of the Syrian border.
Australia’s Smartraveller updated its Jordan advice in October and maintains a “Reconsider Your Need to Travel” rating - its Level 3 equivalent - reflecting the same regional unpredictability.
On the Ground
Tourist sites across Jordan are operating normally. Petra, Wadi Rum, the Dead Sea, and Aqaba have all seen visitors this autumn without reported disruption. Tour operators running October itineraries have not paused or shortened programmes.
Queen Alia International Airport in Amman remains open. Airlines including Royal Jordanian, Emirates, Turkish Airlines, and Gulf carriers are flying to and from Amman on normal schedules. Several European carriers temporarily suspended Jordan operations; Lufthansa Group and British Airways have confirmed resumed services in late October and November.
The Allenby Bridge land crossing between Jordan and the West Bank is subject to short-notice closure and should not be used as a primary exit route.
