Iran launched approximately 20 ballistic missiles toward Jordan on the morning of 9 September 2026. Jordan’s air defence systems, operating alongside US assets in the country, intercepted 18 of the 20 projectiles. Two missiles landed in sparsely populated desert terrain in eastern Jordan without causing casualties, according to Jordanian Armed Forces statements.
Queen Alia International Airport in Amman has remained open. Emirates, however, has extended its suspension of flights to and from Amman (AMM) through 5 October 2026.
Flight Disruptions
The Emirates extension follows earlier regional security advisories. Other carriers serving Amman — including Royal Jordanian, British Airways, and Turkish Airlines — have not issued equivalent suspensions as of 9 September, and some continue to operate scheduled services.
If you are booked on an Emirates flight to or from Amman before 5 October, contact Emirates to rebook or request a refund. The carrier has indicated it will offer full rebooking flexibility.
Travel Advice
The Jordanian government has not declared a national emergency. Amman, Petra, Aqaba, and Wadi Rum remain open. Jordan’s Tourism Ministry has not suspended any travel programming.
Both the UK FCDO and US State Department advise against non-essential travel near the Syrian and Iraqi border areas, but do not advise against travel to Amman, Petra, or Aqaba. Travellers should check their own government’s advisory page for their passport.
Travel insurance policies vary on how they classify state-level missile incidents. Contact your insurer before travel if your policy wording is ambiguous.
Continuing Travel to Jordan
Travellers already in Jordan should follow Jordanian Civil Defence guidance. Connectivity and services at hotels and tourist sites in Amman and Petra are unaffected. Jordan has continued to operate its border and tourist infrastructure despite regional pressures throughout 2026.
