Aqaba’s King Hussein International Airport was temporarily evacuated on 19 July 2026 following a credible security threat, triggering flight cancellations that have continued to affect operations through 21 July. The US Embassy in Amman issued a security alert advising citizens to exercise caution in the Aqaba area.

What Happened

The airport was evacuated and all operations suspended for a period on 19 July while Jordanian security forces responded to the reported threat. The evacuation was completed without reported injuries. Operations were partially resumed later that day, but several departures and arrivals were cancelled outright, with some passengers experiencing multi-hour waits on the apron or in landside areas.

The situation is connected to the broader pattern of regional security incidents affecting travel in the Middle East. Aqaba’s location — on the Red Sea at the convergence of Jordan, Israel, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia — makes it particularly sensitive to regional escalations.

As of 21 July, flights are operating at King Hussein International Airport but with reduced capacity. Some airlines have cancelled specific rotations through 21 July, and the airport is operating under enhanced security protocols.

The US Embassy Alert

The US Embassy in Amman issued a Security Alert on 17 July citing a credible threat to gatherings in the Aqaba area. The alert advised US citizens to avoid crowded public spaces and tourist areas in the city, monitor local news, and be prepared to alter plans at short notice. The alert remains in effect as of 21 July 2026.

Travellers from other nationalities should consult their own government’s travel advisory for Jordan. The UK FCDO and other European foreign ministries have separately updated their advisories to reflect the elevated risk in the Aqaba governorate.

If you have a flight through Aqaba in the next 7 days: Contact your airline now to confirm the flight is operating. Many carriers are offering free rebooking onto alternative dates or routing via Amman’s Queen Alia International Airport.
