Umm Qais - ancient Gadara - sits on a basalt plateau in the extreme north of Jordan, overlooking the Sea of Galilee and the Yarmouk River gorge. The ruins are among the least visited of Jordan’s major Roman sites, which makes them all the more rewarding to explore. The accommodation situation is similarly understated: there is one resthouse at the site, and otherwise you are looking at Irbid as a base.
The Umm Qais Resthouse
Umm Qais Resthouse is located within the archaeological site itself - an Ottoman-era building that has been converted into a restaurant with a small number of guest rooms. It is primarily a restaurant for day visitors, but rooms are sometimes available for overnight stays. Rates from approximately JOD 30–50 per night as of 2026 when rooms are open - confirm by phone before relying on this.
The location is extraordinary: from the resthouse terrace you look directly over the ruins and the Yarmouk valley toward the Sea of Galilee. Eating breakfast here before the ruins open to day visitors is a genuine experience. The restaurant serves Jordanian cooking - mezze, grilled meats, fresh bread - and functions primarily as a lunch restaurant for visitors.
The resthouse accommodation is limited and not always available. It is worth checking, but do not plan an itinerary around its availability without confirming in advance.
Staying in Irbid (25 km Away) - Recommended
For reliable accommodation with a broader choice, Irbid is the practical base for Umm Qais. At 25 km south - 30–40 minutes by car or shared taxi - the distance is manageable, and Irbid has a functioning mid-range hotel scene.

Staying in Ajloun (50 km Away)
If you are combining Umm Qais with the Ajloun Forest Reserve and Jerash, staying in Ajloun (or at the RSCN forest bungalows) gives you a base roughly equidistant from all three sites. Umm Qais is approximately 50 km northwest of Ajloun - about 45–60 minutes by car.
This only makes sense if Umm Qais is part of a broader northern Jordan circuit. The RSCN Ajloun Forest Reserve bungalows are the most atmospheric option in the area (JOD 85–120/night), but you would need a car to cover the distances.
Staying in Amman and Day-Tripping
Amman to Umm Qais is approximately 110 km - 90–120 minutes by car one way. A day trip is possible but long. If you are doing Umm Qais as a standalone day trip from Amman, a private driver is more practical than public transport, which requires connections through Irbid or Jerash.
JETT buses run from Amman to Irbid regularly. From Irbid, shared taxis complete the journey to Umm Qais. The full public transport chain takes approximately 2–2.5 hours each way and requires early departures to have enough time at the site.
What to Know Before You Book
Umm Qais is best visited in the morning for two reasons: the view west toward the Sea of Galilee is clearest before the afternoon haze builds, and the ruins are most atmospheric in early light before the heat builds. An 09:00 arrival - straightforward from Irbid, harder from Amman - is ideal.
The ruins are not crowded. Umm Qais sees far fewer visitors than Jerash or Petra, and you can cover the site at a genuinely unhurried pace.
